Natural Lime Pointing Edinburgh

Sound pointing is the crucial factor in maintaining the health and integrity of any surrounding stonework. We at Muir Stone Repair generally recommend the use of a natural lime mortar when pointing or re-pointing. Lime mortars have considerable advantages over cement based ones.

The least relevant reason for using natural lime as opposed to cement is that it simply looks better, particularly alongside natural stone. Far more importantly natural lime significantly reduces damage to and increases the longevity of adjoining stone. It does this for several reasons:

1. Lime based mortars are much more flexible that cement based ones and therefore allow for more movement within a structure.
2. Lime based mortars are more permeable enabling surrounding stone to ‘breath’ and moisture to evaporate thus reducing water retention and subsequent stone decay.
